Project Overview
Job-ready technical skills for vulnerable young people
Skill Up TVET is Somali Youth Vision’s technical and vocational training initiative implemented under PROSPER SOCO. It provides vulnerable and at-risk young people with marketable skills that can lead to employment, self-employment, and greater socio-economic resilience.
The program offers practical training in trades such as solar-panel repair, mobile-phone maintenance, sewing and tailoring, plumbing, and beauty therapy. These skills were selected to create realistic livelihood pathways while addressing some of the economic pressures that can increase young people’s vulnerability to exclusion and violent extremism.
Skill Up links technical learning with the broader peacebuilding purpose of PROSPER SOCO. By enabling young people to become technicians, tradespeople, and small-business owners, the initiative gives participants a positive role in their communities and strengthens the social and economic ties that support lasting peace.
Period: Training delivered during 2024–2025; graduation held in February 2025.
Geographic Focus: Baidoa, South West State.
Partners and Supporters: Implemented under the GCERF-funded PROSPER SOCO project with ANPPCAN-SOM and other project stakeholders.
Objectives
- Equip vulnerable youth with practical, marketable vocational skills.
- Support transitions into employment and youth-led microenterprise.
- Reduce economic vulnerability and the appeal of extremist recruitment.
- Strengthen community resilience through productive youth participation.
Key Activities
- Six-month vocational courses.
- Training in solar-panel repair, mobile-phone maintenance, sewing and tailoring, plumbing, and beauty therapy.
- Life-skills and livelihood preparation.
- Graduation and transition support for trained youth.
Impact and Results
- Thirty male and female youth graduated from the program in February 2025.
- Graduates gained job-ready skills in practical trades.
- Many graduates transitioned into employment or began micro-business activity, including work as solar technicians, plumbers, and tailors.
- The graduation was celebrated in Baidoa under the theme “Stitching Hope, Powering Futures.”
